A proposal to replace an existing wind turbine in Dungannon was denied due to its significant height and potential adverse effects on the surrounding landscape and wildlife.
A planning application to replace a wind turbine on land north of No 62 Tullydraw Road, Dungannon , has been refused. The proposed turbine would have been nearly twice the height of the existing one, at 75m compared to 42m. The planning officer who assessed the application stated that it would have an unacceptable impact on the visual amenity and landscape character of the area, particularly as the site is in a lowland area with several residential properties nearby.
The application, submitted by Theresa Cassidy on behalf of OES Engineering, also faced concerns from the NIEA - Natural Environment Division (NED) regarding potential impacts on bats and other protected species. The NED highlighted that the proposed location couldn't provide the desired 50m buffer zone between the turbine's blade tip and hedgerows. Despite further ecological information and consultations, the NED maintained concerns, requiring a revised turbine location and additional mitigation measures. Ultimately, the planning officer concluded that the applicant couldn't adequately address these ecological issues, leading to the refusal of the application
