A watchdog found John Smyth failed to declare an interest when his employer, MLA Trevor Clarke, made representations to the planning committee
A DUP councillor has been suspended for three months from a council planning committee for failing to declare interests on applications his MLA employer was lobbying on.
His side-line business venture Versatile Consultancy faced criticism when it first emerged in newspaper reports at the time. Ian Gordon, Assistant Local Government Commissioner for Standards, found Mr Smyth had breached the code relating to non-pecuniary interests. He said this gave rise to a need to declare the interest at the committee and withdraw from the relevant parts of the meeting.
