PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed National Commission on Muslim Filipinos Secretary lawyer Saidamen Pangarungan as the new chief of the Commission on Elections , newly appointed acting presidential spokesperson Secretary Martin Andanar said on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.Andanar said Duterte also appointed George Erwin Garcia and Department of Social Welfare and Development Undersecretary Aimee Torrefranca-Neri as ad interim Comelec commissioners.
The new appointments came following the retirement of Comelec commissioners Antonio Kho, Rowena Guanzon, and Sheriff Abas. Garcia is a veteran election lawyer who handled the electoral protest of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. against Vice President Leni Robredo, his rival for the vice presidential post during the 2016 election.
Andanar said the Palace sees no conflict of interest in the appointment of Garcia even amid the several unresolved petitions against the presidential candidacy of Marcos for the May 2022 polls. “Dumaan yan sa vetting process at dapat respetuhin natin ang prerogative ng pangulong na pumili ng opisyal,” he said.SunStar website welcomes friendly debate, but comments posted on this site do not necessarily reflect the views of the SunStar management and its affiliates.
