Opposition leader Peter Dutton has pledged to hold another referendum solely on recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution if the Voice fails.

Speaking to Sky News Australia on Sunday, the Liberal leader maintained his hope that all sides of politics could still find common ground on the issue of Indigenous recognition before the vote on October 14, but said Australians would get a second opportunity to vote regardless of the outcome.

In recent weeks, the opposition has made a push for the Albanese government to drop the Voice to Parliament from its proposed Constitutional changes, arguing the body was divisive and would not lead to an improvement in outcomes. Given the overlap between elements of both proposals, many have been pushing for further efforts to compromise and reach consensus on the issue.

"My hope would be that there is one last chance for the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition to actually come together," he said.Mr Dutton said he shared the hope of Mr Baird, adding he was"happy" to sit down with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and work to pass legislation in the coming weeks which would establish regional Voice bodies.
