Liberal leader Peter Dutton is expected to unveil a frontbench shake up on Tuesday, with two Indigenous senators tipped to be promoted to assistant ministers in the run-up to the Voice referendum.
Shadow minister for the NDIS, social services and housing Michael Sukkar, and manager of opposition business Paul Fletcher are the other two names floated for the role. Dutton and Price campaigned against the Voice for two days in Alice Springs last week and Price later confirmed she had had discussions with Dutton about an expanded role in the campaign against the Voice. The other backbench senator tipped for promotion is South Australian Liberal Kerrynne Liddle, who like Price is a first term MP, and she is expected to be appointed as a shadow assistant minister to Dutton.
An MP close to Dutton said there had been numerous discussions about Price being elevated immediately into shadow cabinet but cautioned that “while it might look good, you have to be ready”.
