The first Cold Weather Payments of the year have been triggered after temperatures plummeted since Saturday
In response to the recent cold snap, households in certain parts of England will receive a one-off £25 payment to assist with energy costs. The UK has seen temperatures drop below zero since the beginning of the new year, with heavy snowfall in some areas.
When the temperature falls below 0C for seven consecutive days, eligible households in the affected postcode areas will receive a one-off £25 payment. To qualify, households must be claiming a benefit such as Pension Credit, Income Support or Universal Credit. According to the DWP, 18 postcode areas in England are due payments for the period January 2 to January 9. The first cold snap of the season in mid-November previously triggered Cold Weather Payments, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Areas set to receive a payment include certain parts of Cumbria and Northumberland. Scottish postcodes are not included in the Cold Weather Payment scheme, however, some regions of the Scottish Borders that are technically in England despite having a Scottish postcode are eligible for payments.
