DWP challenge to £20 Universal Credit uplift could mean £1,500 in back pay for millions on benefits
The Department of Work and Pensions is facing another legal challenge on a benefit increase it awarded to some claimants during the coronavirus pandemic. The 'uplift' was given to those claiming Universal Credit and amounted to an extra £20 a week.

At the time of the appeal announcement, Mr Ford KC wrote on the Osbornes Law website : “On 18 February 2022 the High Court dismissed the case brought by Osbornes on behalf of 4 claimants challenging the UK Government’s failure to apply the £20 per week uplift to legacy benefit recipients that had been provided to Universal Credit claimants during the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the uplift was not extended to more than two million people on older benefits such as Employment Support Allowance , Income Support and Jobseeker's Allowance - which campaign groups said disproportionately affected disabled people.
