The number of people claiming PIP has increased by nearly 1.1m since the first coronavirus pandemic lockdown began in March 2020
The Department for Work and Pensions has released new figures showing that as of April this year, a record 3.5 million people were receiving Personal Independence Payments each month. This number has surged since the Covid pandemic broke out in March 2020, with a million more Brits claiming the benefit, primarily due to three groups of conditions.
In total, these three conditions made up three quarters of new claims, with more than 760,000 new claims since 2020. The report highlighted 10 health conditions that saw the largest increase in claimants over the last four years.
