These payments ensure individuals are not worse off financially when moving from legacy benefits like tax credits or jobseeker's allowance.
The Department of Work and Pensions has issued new guidance for Universal Credit claimants who are eligible for an 'additional payment' each month.
As part of the process, some people may be entitled to 'transactional protection', which ensures that anyone moving to Universal Credit will not be worse off under the newer benefit. If your Universal Credit payment is calculated to be less than what you receive on your old-style benefit, you will get a transitional protection payment added to your Universal Credit entitlement to make up the difference.
The DWP has issued new information on its website, clarifying how the 'transitional element' is calculated and who is entitled to it. The DWP explains: "Your Universal Credit entitlement is assessed every month, based on your current circumstances. This is known as an assessment period. "The indicative Universal Credit award, including the transitional element, is an estimation based on your circumstances the day before you make your Universal Credit claim."
