The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed that older people resident in England or Wales during the September qualifying week and born on or before June 27, 1960, will qualify for athis year.
The annual payment is worth either £100, £200 or £300 - depending on someone’s age and living arrangements.this year. The clarification came in response to a written Commons question from MP Michael Wheeler, who asked why the cut-off date for receiving the payment falls in June.
He said: "The Winter Fuel Payment is an age-related payment payable to everyone who has reached State Pension age on or before the end of the qualifying week and is ordinarily resident in England or Wales.
" The UK Government restored Winter Fuel Payment eligibility for pensioners with annual incomes below £35,000 last year, meaning more than nine million older people received support with their energy bills during the colder months. However, because the State Pension age is gradually rising from 66 to 67 between now and 2028, not everyone approaching retirement age will qualify this year.
Mr Bell explained that people born between April 6, 1960 and March 5, 1961 now reach State Pension age at 66 plus a specified number of additional months, depending on their exact date of birth. As a result, a person must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, to have reached State Pension age by the end of the qualifying week on September 27, 2026.
