Pensioners earning under £35,000 are set to receive between £100 and £300 next winter
The Winter Fuel payment provides financial support to eligible older people across Britain, reaching nine million recipients nationwide. The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed that elderly individuals residing in England or Wales during the September qualifying week, who were born on or before June 27, 1960, will qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment this year.
The annual payment amounts to either £100, £200 or £300, determined by age and household circumstances. Pensions Minister Torsten Bell has clarified why June 27, 1960 represents the critical birth date for Winter Fuel Payment eligibility this year. His explanation came in response to a written parliamentary question from MP Michael Wheeler, who asked why the eligibility threshold falls in June.
Addressing the Worsley and Eccles MP, Mr Bell explained that Winter Fuel Payment is linked to State Pension age and the qualifying week - running from 21 to 27 September - for the 2026/27 payment. He stated: "The Winter Fuel Payment is an age-related payment payable to everyone who has reached State Pension age on or before the end of the qualifying week and is ordinarily resident in England or Wales.
" The UK Government reinstated Winter Fuel Payment eligibility for pensioners with annual incomes below £35,000 last year, leading to more than nine million elderly individuals receiving help with their energy bills during the winter months. However, with the State Pension age gradually rising from 66 to 67 between now and 2028, not everyone approaching retirement will qualify this year.
Mr Bell explained that individuals born between April 6, 1960 and March 5, 1961, now reach State Pension age at 66 plus a certain number of extra months, based on their exact date of birth, reportsAs such, a person must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, to have attained State Pension age by the end of the qualifying week on September 27, 2026. The DWP Minister said: "Therefore, a person needs to be born on or before 27 June 1960 to have reached State Pension age by the end of the qualifying week to be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026/27.
" Anyone born after June 27, 1960, will not have reached State Pension age in time for this year's qualifying week and will consequently be ineligible for a Winter Fuel Payment. Winter Fuel Payments are usually issued automatically to qualifying pensioners and are intended to help with heating costs during the winter period. Individuals can verify their State Pension age using the online calculator available on GOV. UK.
