The autumn statement from the chancellor on November 22 is expected to be when news on any more support would be announced

The Department for Work and Pensions could introduce more cost of living payments to help struggling households get through the tough winter months ahead.

The new price cap on gas and electricity reduces the average bill to £1,923 from £2,074 per year on October 1. However, consumers still face paying more for energy this winter because the Energy Bill Support scheme that paid £400 over six months is no longer in place, with low-income and vulnerable households set to be hit hardest.

In a recent parliamentary debate on disability benefits, Tom Pursglove, DWP Minister of State for Disabled People, Health and Work, said: "There is ongoing work to review the cost of living payments that the Government has made available in the current climate. I anticipate that the results will come forward over the autumn and inform future decisions that we make.

Sir Stephen Timms, Work and Pensions Committee chairman, responded: ""To the minister, let me just say I am grateful to him for suggesting that perhaps the Autumn Statement is when we will hear about the plans for further cost of living payments. I think they are going to be needed."
