The Glasgow MP said: 'This is a scandalous revelation which lies squarely with the Tories'
Westminster's Work and Pensions Committee investigated the health assessment system used to decide if people qualify for benefits like Personal Independence Payments and Employment Support Allowance .
The report states: “We were deeply concerned that nearly five years after our predecessor’s report, people are still experiencing psychological distress as a result of undergoing health assessments. “The Government should commit to undertaking regular reviews of the impacts of assessments, as well as making data available to external researchers.”The committee heard evidence from Ben Barr, an applied public health research professor at the University of Liverpool, who carried out studies into the impact of Work Capability Assessments.
“We estimated that during that period, across England, the process had led to an additional 600 suicides, 300,000 additional cases of mental health problems and a large rise in the prescribing of antidepressants.”
