The Department for Work and Pensions has warned millions of benefits claimants that 'radical' changes are coming
The Department for Work and Pensions has signalled to millions of benefit recipients that significant "radical" changes are on the horizon. DWP chief Liz Kendall highlighted an "unavoidable" overspend, attributing it to "the inheritance from the last government", reports Birmingham Live.
"Whilst this Government has already shown that it will not shy away from difficult decisions, this breach could only have been addressed through implementing immediate and severe cuts to welfare spending. This would not have been the right course of action." She continued: "But in the years during and since the pandemic - I will not shy away from telling the truth - things changed. While the number of jobs kept going up, the number of people economically inactive also started to go up, and with that, the welfare bill, and that is a big problem.

Critics highlight the disparity between these lavish rewards and the DWP's oversight of a benefits system that lost £13.9 billion to fraud and error last year.

UK Government to Monitor Benefit Recipients' Bank Accounts to Combat FraudThe UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) plans to monitor bank accounts of benefit recipients to identify potential fraud. Initially, the DWP will scrutinize accounts with regular overseas transactions or balances exceeding £16,000. The plan aims to eventually implement a fully automated system to detect anomalies and allow the DWP to reclaim overpaid funds directly from bank accounts without a court order. While the government argues this will streamline the process, UK Finance raises concerns about potential risks to vulnerable customers and conflicts with existing regulations.
