Around eight million households will begin to recieve the money from the end of October - but the Department for Work and Pensions says criminals will target people set to get the boost
The Government has issued a warning about the Department for Work and Pensions £300 cost of living payment which is set to be landing in more than eight million people’s accounts at the end of the month. The money will automatically arrive between October 31 and November 19 2023.
But the DWP has spoken out about fraudsters who are known to be targeting those who might be about to receive the money - and trying to get cash out of them and personal details. The Government emphasises that people don’t need to apply - if you’re eligible you should get it automatically because the benefits system already knows what they get.
The DWP said: “If you have had a message asking you to apply or contact someone about the payment, this might be a scam. Do not give out private information , reply to text messages, download attachments or click on any links in emails if you’re not sure they’re genuine.” If you think you’ve been a victim of an online scam or fraud contact Action Fraud if you think you’ve lost money or been hacked because of an online scam or fraud and you’re in England or Wales.
