A new campaign that would see pensioners given an income boost is gaining momentum

Ahead of the Chancellor's Autumn Statement, when the next State Pension increase starting from April 2024 will be announced, all eyes are on what the Government will do to control the spiralling costs of the welfare system.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We remain committed to the triple lock and we will ensure that the State Pension remains sustainable and fair across generations while providing security and dignity in retirement for millions of people across the country." The current New State Pension is £203.85 a week and the old Basic State Pension paid out for those retiring before then is £156.20 a week. Statistics show that the average payment for anyone on a State Pension is £166.13 a week, while around 200,000 people don't get any State Pension at all due to having insufficient National Insurance contributions.

The petition, signed by 12,600 people so far, was started by Michael Thompson, who wrote: "The State Pension is far too low. The Government must increase the basic State Pension to £21,673.60 a year and extend this to everyone aged 60 or over. This should lift thousands out of poverty, give our elderly folk more power to survive, and help grow the real economy, bottom up.
