The government is set to incur an 'unexpected' £100million increase in next year's retirement benefit bill
The government is bracing for an "unexpected" £100 million surge in next year's retirement benefit bill, which could raise questions about the sustainability of the state pension as we know it. Sir Steve Webb, a partner at LCP, has highlighted that revised wage growth figures from the Office for National Statistics released today might significantly increase taxpayer expenditure.
Webb suggests that this marginal 0.1 percent hike could tack an additional £100 million onto the government's pension bill, at a time when Chancellor Rachel Reeves is striving to balance the UK's finances. The adjusted wage growth rate could mean some pensions increase by approximately £9 per week.
The announcement of increased pension figures may offer little comfort to pensioners bracing for a winter without the £300 winter fuel allowance payment, absent for the first time in over 25 years. Despite this, Webb cautions that pensioners could still encounter financial challenges in the months ahead.
