The DWP has officially started sending out the Winter Fuel Payments to millions of state pensioners in the UK
State pensioners across the UK are £300 better off this week as the Department for Work and Pensions has started issuing Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300, depending on the year of birth. The system, which used to provide every state pensioner in the UK with a Winter Fuel Payment, was controversially changed to a means-testing system this year.
Previously, all state pensioners in the UK received these payments, with £200 for those under 75 and £300 for those over 75. Labour announced that Winter Fuel Payments will now be means-tested and only those claiming a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit or Universal Credit will receive the cash.
The DWP explained: "The vast majority of these payments will land in pensioners' bank accounts automatically, directly helping vulnerable households with their energy bills." They added: "The value of a Winter Fuel Payment is £200 for people born between 23 September, 1944 and 22 September, 1958, and £300 for those born before 23 September, 1944."
