DWP to offer Universal Credit claimants help with their mortgages and home repairs
Thousands of people who claim Universal Credit will now be offered extra help towards their mortgage interest as well as home improvements or repairs.
Claimants will be able to access financial help worth up to £200,000, the Daily Record reports. Those who qualify for Universal Credit will automatically be offered support after three months. Before this, claimants needed to be unemployed for nine months before the support would be extended to them. Now, claimants don't need to be unemployed to benefit from the help.
Mims Davies, Minister for Social Mobility, Youth and Progression, said: “The fear of losing your home when you have fallen on difficult times is incredibly stressful and makes getting back on your feet all the more difficult. Support for Mortgage Interest loans is also aimed at helping people with disabilities adapt their home. The DWP said that even if claimants reject the offer of a loan initially, as long as they are still eligible, they can start claiming it at any point.
