But many can expect a payment boost

Some people on Universal Credit have been told they can expect a payment boost this week from the Department for Work and Pensions . The government department has released guidance explaining how people's finances will change if they move from their current payments to Universal Credit.

Other benefits, such as Personal Independence Payment , will stay the same. Migration is the process of the DWP transferring people over to UC. The DWP says around 1.4 million of the 2.6 million remaining legacy benefits claimants would get more money if on Universal Credit instead, 300,000 would see no change in their payments and approximately 900,000 households would get less. Two-thirds of those forced over to Universal Credit but getting less will be offered transitional protection to keep their benefits at the previous higher level, though this is only a temporary measure, the DWP says.

Households receiving tax credits with savings of more than £6,000 - UC entitlement is reduced in a different calculation to tax credits .
