Over 120,000 households in the North West are among the 842,000 caught up in the UK benefits change

The Department for Work and Pensions has pinpointed "real and perceived barriers" within the Universal Credit system as it prepares to replace six traditional welfare benefits.

The National Audit Office confirmed that one in five people on tax credits, who were asked to switch to Universal Credit, haven't applied and so their benefits have been stopped. It said the DWP research had identified "real and perceived barriers to claiming Universal Credit" where some people: "The Department needs to continue to develop its assessment of the impact to provide assurance on value for money and secure the best results when Universal Credit is fully implemented."
