Keith Elliott said e-scooter riders should have to follow similar rules to drivers. He said: "Should have to be taxed. Should have to be insured. Should need license to ride and helmet. People who ride these have NO respect for the law or pedestrians. Why is it that if your car has no insurance when driving, the police will stop you and take the car OFF you??????"
But there was also support for e-scooters, with a number of people saying they liked them and just wanted to see them become legal. Many said rules could be implemented to make it safer for riders and other road users, including compulsory training to ride them. But Katrine Delaney said the issue went beyond safety, with hire e-scooters often "abandoned when the journey is completed". She said: "They’re everywhere where I live… On the pavements, in hedges, even in people's gardens."
