The iconic band have pledged to play as many shows as their audience demands - we hope they do
“We’re just a bunch of guys with guitars,” says Don Henley, by way of introducing Eagles on the opening night of a five-show residency at Manchester’s Co-op Live.You suspect nobody will have been happier to hear this than the venue’s operators; for them, the fewer moving parts, the better, after a torrid opening season at the £350 million new arena defined by delays, cancellations and at least one air conditioning unit falling from the rafters.
Their astonishing commercial success – Their Greatest Hits is the third best-selling album of all time – is attributable to them representing a sort of musical comfort food, blending blissful harmonies with woozy guitar solos in a way that nourishes the soul. Tonight, that winning formula is tinged with more melancholy than usual; these shows have been advertised as the band’s last in the UK.
The set’s bittersweet feel is underlined by the absence of Henley’s co-frontman Glenn Frey, who died in 2016. In his place is his son, Deacon, who fills in for his dad on lead vocals on the mellow likes of ‘Peaceful Easy Feeling’, ‘Tequila Sunrise’ and the gorgeously lovelorn ‘Lyin’ Eyes’, doing them handsome justice.
Walsh, on the other hand, is the Keith Richards of the piece, right down to borrowing the Rolling Stone’s quip about it being good to see anybody.
