President Joe Biden faces no real challenger in the Democratic primary, and former President Donald Trump is seen as the likely Republican nominee.
Democratic voters in Bexar County, facing an uncompetitive presidential primary and am uninspiring race for U.S. Senate, weren’t particularly interested in casting early ballots. Republican voters, on the other hand, were eager to vote early. But GOP enthusiasm aside, the overall numbers were abysmal. And turnout on Tuesday — election day — isn’t expected to be much better.
For Democrats, “the top of the ticket right now is a contested U.S. Senate race” for Ted Cruz’s seat, he said. State Sen. Roland Gutierrez of San Antonio faces U.S. Rep. Colin Allred of Dallas in the crowded primary for that seat. Nine candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination. Neither of the two Democratic front-runners are exciting voters like Beto O’Rourke, who challenged Cruz in 2018. O’Rourke came within 3 percentage points of Cruz in that year’s general election.
