A controversy is brewing at East Cleveland City Hall, as city council members question the mayor about what happened to nearly $1 million earmarked for a new fire engine and ambulance.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -
Twon Billings, the President of East Cleveland City Council tells 19 News, “Yes. It’s a state of emergency. Our ladder truck we have is currently not working, and the fire engine doesn’t have lights. That’s putting the city at risk, putting fire at risk, that’s putting whoever is in the back of the vehicle at risk. Everything is at risk, and here it is that we as a government is not managing our funds.
Justin Anderson with the East Cleveland Civil Rights Commission says, “It’s a traumatic situation. The city has just one working fire truck now. And it’snot even fully functionable. The ladder is broken, and if the rest of the truck goes down, we don’t know what we’re going to do.” A 19 News crew went down to city hall to find Mayor King and given him an opportunity to tell his side of the story about the fire truck funds. The mayor’s secretary told us her boss was on a call and she did not believe he was available to speak. 19 News reiterated it was important for the mayor to have a chance to tell his side of the story about the general fund dollars in question. Our crew waited on a bench outside of the mayor’s office for about 30 minutes, when police were called on us.
