The sub committee One Voice: Friends of Westwood oppose council proposals which would see the closure of the Red Deer Centre, Red Deer Bowling Club and Westwood Hall
A campaign group formed to protect under threat community facilities in Westwood has vowed to fight the controversial plans - with backing from the town's MSP.A Westwood Community Council meeting to form the campaign group attracted a huge turnout with 100 local users of the Red Deer Bowling Club, the Stitching Circle, Table Tennis, Pals Plus Stroke Club, U32 Family History Group as well as church and school representatives and local councillors.
“The closure of the Red Deer Bowling Club would also be a huge blow to the community, this is a well-used and long established local club at the heart of the community.” Councillor McDougall added: “I really would like a more positive approach to be taken with the community to see if we can find better solutions. We would like no options to be taken off the table until full discussions can be undertaken regarding the future of these facilities with the community and not just picking off individual groups as appears to possibly be happening with the Stroke Club. These facilities are not just for today’s groups, but for future ones too.
“Council leader Joe Fagan was suspended for two months for leaking confidential information to the media in the run up to the 2021 Scottish Parliament elections, claiming the SNP were to close facilities such as these. He claimed after his recent suspension that his conscience was clear, but it is his party who control South Lanarkshire Council and who are now eager to close these facilities. Such a position is hypocritical.
