Pirates lifted the trophy after a convincing win over Northants Knights
East Kilbride Pirates won the Under-16 National Plate final at Sheffield Hallam University on Saturday.
After successfully qualifying in the play-offs earlier last month with a win over Birmingham Lions, the young Pirates travelled down to Yorkshire to compete in the tournament, which was part of Britbowl, accompanied by a large travelling support of parents and family members. The Pirates beat a physical Swindon Storm side by 30-20 in the semi-finals, in what was a tense match.Pirates emerged with a 34-14 win over Knights, and head coach Jim Dorman was able to hoist the trophy beside his jubilant team.This was the young Pirates’ first trip to a National Finals event since 2018.Pirates chairman Amanda McDonald said: “Congratulations to all the players, coaches and staff, whose hard work made this possible.
The young Pirates are taking a well-earned break over the next few weeks, but will be in action again soon.The team train on Sunday mornings at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground, and will soon be starting a Wednesday evening training slot over the winter at Calderglen High School in East Kilbride.
