The East Midlands Mayor says her authority could fund even more new homes across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire on top of the 1,400 already announced. Both counties have had brownfield parcels of land identified for new homes, with £17 million already pledged to get projects going. Claire Ward, elected as the first ever East Midlands Mayor for Labour in May 2024, leads the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

The authority is being given millions of pounds every year by central government to invest and make decisions in areas previously controlled by Westminster - ranging from jobs to transport. Housing is another major area and is arguably where the most progress has been seen since Claire Ward was elected. The Mayor said: 'The reality is we're going to be looking at around 1,400 new homes across the region through unlocking brownfield homes and that's tangible difference that we're going to be making in the region.' The £16.8 million brownfield housing scheme being used by the EMCCA was established by the previous Conservative government and is set to deliver 1,399 new homes. That number has slightly reduced from the original 1,479 homes planned after several projects forming part of the original number were cancelled. No Nottinghamshire projects have been cancelled, with the bulk of changes affecting Derbyshire, but a housing development on Queens Road in Nottingham has been reduced from 382 homes to 274 homes.
