Historic England awarded a total of £81,000 to five heritage projects across the East of England, celebrating the stories of local working-class people and overlooked historic places. Projects range from documenting the Windrush generation's impact on Essex history to exploring the railway heritage of Melton Constable and preserving the memories of Hemsby as a holiday resort.

Heritage projects across East of England have received a significant funding boost from Historic England , with a total of £81,000 awarded to five initiatives spanning Essex , Suffolk , and Norfolk . Duncan Wilson, from Historic England , emphasized the importance of these projects, stating that they 'shine a light on the stories of local, working class people and their extraordinary contributions to history.

' He highlighted the organization's aim to raise awareness of 'overlooked historic places on their doorstep.' One project focusing on the Windrush generation's impact on Essex history received almost £11,000. The Anglo Asiatic Arts and Heritage Alliance secured this funding to document memories and experiences of individuals from Caribbean communities. These recollections will be preserved for use at Thurrock Museum, Essex, as well as in a traveling museum exhibition docked in Tilbury in 1948. Alan Bright, co-director of the project, underscored its significance, stating, 'This is so important for us because it is the first oral history of this community in Thurrock and an important opportunity for their voices to be heard.' Other projects across East of England include an art exhibition at the Jaywick Martello Tower, granted £13,000 to amplify the village's 'unique and vibrant seaside heritage,' according to Lelia Ferro, tower assistant. A Norfolk project exploring the railway heritage of Melton Constable received £23,500, bringing together documents, artwork, and memorabilia about the village's role as a hub for the Midlands and Great Northern Railway from 1800 until its decline 164 years later. Furthermore, The Holiday Makers, dedicated to preserving the history of Hemsby as a premier holiday resort, were awarded £23,700 to focus on the former Pontins park, accommodating up to 2,440 guests before its closure in 2009. Project manager Sophie Little expressed hope that the project would 'unite the vibrant community in celebrating the joy Hemsby has brought to so many people over the years.
