A Jane Doe victim found in 1985 along I-20 near Tyler, Texas, was recently identified as Sindy Gina Crow, the Smith County Sheriff's Office announced.
After nearly four decades of searching for answers, law enforcement and a Dallas-Fort Worth-area woman’s family finally have some thanks to developments in DNA and ancestry databases.
After following multiple leads that failed to identify the woman, the sheriff’s office partnered with the DNA Doe Project in 2021. The DNA Doe Project is a nonprofit that assists agencies in identifying remains using DNA ancestry searches and investigative genetic genealogy, a technique combining genetic testing with traditional genealogical research to generate investigative leads.
The DNA collected was submitted to the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s anthropology department for comparison. “Anytime we have anybody who has lost a life, we will not rest until we identify the body and if at all possible try to determine what caused the death, which will be the next part,” Sheriff Larry Smith said at a Tuesday news conference.
