Veteran EastEnders actor Rudolph Walker, known for his role as Patrick Trueman, has bravely revealed a harrowing two-year period where he faced poverty and homelessness. Despite his successful career on the BBC soap, Walker secretly battled financial hardship following a divorce, living out of a suitcase and relying on friends for accommodation.
EastEnders icon Rudolph Walker , known to fans as the Square's charmer Patrick Trueman , bravely opened up about being broke and homeless for two years, a dark chapter in his life he kept secret from fellow actors and his kids. The 84 year old heartbreakingly revealed that the journey to Elstree Studios was often marred with tears as he battled the "utter despair" of living this traumatic "double life".
Rudolph spoke openly about the ordeal: "It was painful. It was extremely difficult. I just didn't have any financial means. I was literally starting from scratch again in my 70s, with nowhere to live. It was a time of great pain and loneliness." "Diane knew there was something going on, but I never revealed the depth of what was happening," he admits. "I am who I am."
"Regardless of how difficult things are, regardless of how little I have, I will survive. I came from a background where I had very little, so when I had absolutely nothing even at the height of fame I had that resilience, that will to survive." Today, a whole decade later, he's found his equilibrium and is blessed with "fantastic" neighbours in his Reading abode. The actor advises, "Never give up," drawing on personal philosophy and experience which has led him to establish the Rudolph Walker Foundation back in 2009, fuelling a passion for helping youths through the creative arts.
