Jet2 and easyJet offer flights to the island from Liverpool
Among those is Jet2, which will begin flying from the Speke airport in 2024, offering a number of destinations for summer and winter sun. The budget airline's first summer schedule from the city will begin in March, flying to 20 destinations, including seven new routes from the city.
In its travel guide, The Times says: "One sandy beach after another lines the north coast, along with some of Crete’s largest cities and resorts. But even there you’re never far from a mountain road leading into another world of breathtaking landscapes, lonesome archaeological sites, frescoed Byzantine chapels and timeless villages."
If you're after history, the hilltop monastery at Moni Arkadiou dates from the 16th century and is remarkably well preserved. It also is a prominent symbol of Crete's past, being the place that people sought refuge in during the resistance against Ottoman troops in the 19th century. Inside, the wine cellar was used to store gunpowder, used by villagers to defend themselves.
