High blood pressure - medically known as hypertension - affects around a third of adults in the UK and can cause serious health problems
A staggering one in three adults in the UK are grappling with a potentially lethal condition known as high blood pressure or hypertension. This medical condition forces the heart to work overtime to circulate blood throughout the body, putting undue stress on the heart and other organs.
Fresh research has shown that regular consumption of broccoli could significantly lower blood pressure, particularly in middle-aged and older adults. A study by Edith Cowan University in Australia found that consuming around four servings of cruciferous vegetables daily for a fortnight resulted in a noticeable drop in systolic blood pressure.
Emma Connolly, a co-author of the study, stated in a university press release: "Increasing vegetable intake is widely recommended to reduce heart disease risk, and previous observational studies have shown, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, have stronger relationships with lower heart disease risk than other vegetables. However, while these vegetables are consumed globally, cruciferous vegetables typically make up a small portion of total vegetable intake.
During the control intervention, participants consumed an equivalent amount of root and squash vegetables, such as potato, sweet potato, carrot, and pumpkin, also in soup form. Both groups were equipped with a blood pressure cuff that automatically recorded blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and night.
