A new study reveals that the Ebola virus (EBOV) can travel through the skin's layers and appear on the surface, potentially enabling person-to-person transmission through skin contact.
University of Iowa Health Care researchers, along with colleagues at Texas Biomedical Research Institute and Boston University, have made a significant discovery about the Ebola virus (EBOV). Previous outbreaks highlighted the transmission of EBOV through contact with bodily fluids, but this study delves into a lesser-known route: skin contact. Their research traced the cellular path EBOV takes to move through the skin's layers and appear on the surface.
The study found that EBOV targets specific cell types within the skin and that human skin specimens can actively support EBOV infection. These findings, published in Science Advances, suggest that the skin's surface could be a significant pathway for person-to-person transmission. Senior author Wendy Maury, PhD, UI professor of microbiology and immunology, emphasizes the importance of understanding how EBOV interacts with skin cells for developing effective antiviral strategies
