Variety is the spice of election tussles
. This week has seen leader Sir Ed Davey make a splash with his paddleboard, tackle a water slide and partake in a joyous downhill cycle spree, legs akimbo, past startled onlookers at the launch of the Welsh campaign.
Election campaigns in a first-past-the-post system are brutal on the parties outside the duopoly . They have to shout or turn cartwheels to hit the news bulletins and if they do so in unconventional ways, they’re accused of trivialising the contest. In fairness, there’s also not detail of this in Farage’s vision either – gritty questions of where the money comes from to deliver on his promises. The need to address rising expectations and an ageing population’s demands on health and pension schemes constrain the two main parties’ spending offer, but don’t really figure for those in the subplots of British politics.
