The 16-year-old's case is set to be heard by top judges in London
The 16-year-old was jailed for life, to serve a minimum of 20 years after he was unanimously convicted of the transgender teen’s murder. Ratcliffe was found guilty alongside his friend Scarlett Jenkinson.
During February’s hearing, sentencing judge Mrs Justice Yip said the pair would only be released if the Parole Board decided that they 'no longer pose a danger'. Jenkinson, from Culcheth, and Ratcliffe had known each other since the age of 11, attending Culcheth High School together. The pair fled the scene and the murder weapon, a hunting knife which Ratcliffe had bought on a family holiday to Bulgaria weeks earlier, was discovered in his bedroom. Mrs Justice Yip said she could not be sure 'precisely who did what' at the scene of the murder. In court, both had blamed the other.
She told the killers: "I sentence you on the basis that both of you played a full part in killing Brianna and both intended she should die." The judge said Jenkinson's 'primary motive' for the killing was her 'deep desire to kill'.
