Generous donations from Hill's estate included £10,000 to the air ambulance in Walsall, £10,000 to Leukaemia UK - an illness Hill himself battled, £5,000 to Blind Veterans UK, and £5,000 to The Macular Disease Society, a charity supporting those with an eye condition that Hill suffered from, leading to his gradual loss of sight.
Hill's career was launched when he answered an advertisement in Melody Maker seeking a vocalist for the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals. His audition at the band's base in Catterick, North Yorkshire, led to a role that allowed him to complete his military national service while performing across Europe and the Middle East.
