EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Johnston, 52, previously sold land on his Oxfordshire estate to the Soho House private members' club group
When Nicholas Johnston bought an idyllic Devon seaside village 'on a whim' for £11.5million, he prompted fury among locals by unveiling plans to develop it with a beach club, new homes and underground car park.
Johnston also owns Great Tew, a 4,000-acre estate in Oxfordshire that hosts the annual Cornbury Festival, nicknamed 'Poshstock' for its popularity among the 'Chipping Norton set', including former prime minister Lord Cameron and his wife, Samantha. The decision by Johnston and his wife Saskia, 38, to sell up in Bantham is likely to please locals, following years of opposition to his plans for the village.
Johnston suffered a significant setback when a parish plan to ban outsiders from buying second homes won overwhelming support from villagers. He did enjoy success with the Bantham Estate Vineyard, planted in 2021, which won a medal for its Pinot Gris white wine at the WineGB Awards earlier this year. Sir Rod Stewart sold his entire music catalogue for £80 million earlier this year, and now another veteran rocker wants to follow suit – but not for financial reasons.
For a pair of camels appeared outside the Saatchi Yates Gallery this week, where Bruce Omar Yates held the launch of his debut novel, The Muslim Cowboy. Chelsy Davy, who had an on-off relationship with King Charles's younger son for seven years until 2011, announced on social media yesterday that she had given birth to her second child, Chloe.
