Forget The Scream - Munch's portraits at the National Portrait Gallery give a fresh and nuanced understanding of his character

Forget The Scream - Munch's portraits at the National Portrait Gallery give a fresh and nuanced understanding of his characteris naturally understood as a definitive glimpse inside the artist’s soul, as much as an embodiment of 20th-century angst. No surprise then thatis generally understood to have been an alcohol-ravaged depressive, beset by demons, a character almost comically incompatible with the steady professionalism of a portrait painter.

Beginning with naturalistic family portraits, the exhibition follows a chronological path through the fin-de-siècle years of debauched adventuring and artistic self-discovery in Paris and Berlin, to the period after the First World War when he bought Ekely, the country estate on the outskirts of Kristiania where he lived from 1916 until his death in 1944.

Less cryptic is his double portrait of collectors Käthe and Hugo Perls, 1913, who visited Munch not for a portrait, but to buy prints. As was his way, he caught them off guard, asking them to hold a pose that reveals with uncomfortable clarity the state of the marriage.
