A gardening expert on TikTok reveals a clever and cost-effective way to utilize eggshells to boost plant growth. Baking, crushing, and soaking eggshells in apple cider vinegar creates a potent calcium fertilizer that can be diluted and used throughout the growing season. This method effectively removes contaminants and makes calcium readily available for plants, particularly benefiting tomatoes and peppers.

A gardening expert has shared a clever tip that uses eggshells to supercharge the growth of your plants and flowers. Laura, who heads the Young Growers Club aimed at inspiring children to grow their own produce, took to TikTok to share this unknown tactic. 'This eggshell fertiliser is so easy, and cheap to make,' she noted in her video caption.

'You basically need to cook the eggshells to remove any water and contaminants, crush them, put them in a jar with organic apple cider vinegar and then let the magic happen.' In the opening scene of her video, Laura shows off the final product: 'I'll use this during the growing season to fertilise my plants - during the growing season it'll provide calcium.' She proceeds to illustrate her full method with a dozen eggs, baking them for 15 minutes at 160C. The important thing, Laura insists, is to watch the oven vigilantly to prevent them from burning. Once baked, they should be removed from the oven and broken up with caution. Laura advises swaddling them in a cloth and softly battering them with a rolling pin. Laura then transfers the smashed eggshells into a diminutive jar till it’s about one-tenth filled. When pouring in the apple cider vinegar, she highlights the importance of leaving some space at the top of the jar to dodge a frothy overflow. Upon completion of the process, a small amount of foam residue should remain. She elaborates: 'The chemical reaction that occurs looks awesome but also makes the calcium available to plants in a water-soluble form. This can be used to feed the soil for tomatoes and peppers.' Laura further advises that before use, the jar should be gently sealed and left in dark surroundings for a few weeks. 'Once ready, dilute and use over the growing season,' she concludes. 'Note: it's strong so it will need to be diluted to a ratio of one tablespoon to 10 litres of water.' When one of Laura's followers asked: 'Why do you bake them? ' Laura clarified: 'Gets rid of any contaminants. You could just wash them and crush them. But Nigel Palmer (who I learned this from) always bakes them.' Another follower expressed their fascination: 'I have never seen this method before, how fascinating! Now I want to try this myself,' to which Laura responded: 'Definitely worth it. You can use it on your tomatoes and peppers in the summer.' As the UK approaches the growing season, it might be beneficial to try this tip. It could potentially enhance the quality of your flowers and produce
