Running has recently taken a new meaning for her as she runs to raise money in honor of her brother, Taj , and the Utah Smiles Foundation .The surgery to fix the cleft lip is expensive, and Zara wanted to help. She decided she could help by doing what she does best."What if I ran and had people pledge money for every mile?" she asked.A surgeon with the foundation, Dr. Devan Griner , said every penny counts.
"We have people who don't have insurance, we have people who are underinsured, we have people who can't afford the gas to get to the operating room," Griner said.Griner performed the surgery."If you can't develop a healthy self image early on in life, it's hard to develop that later in life," Griner said.Angie Lions, with the Utah Smiles Foundation, said, "I always say that cleft care is a family affair; it involves the entire family.
Steve Wright with Mountain America Credit Union said, "So this is $500 to help with your donation.
