Former Prime Minister and EU President Donald Tusk is poised to return to power after his Civic Coalition party won 31.6 per cent of the vote. Two centrist and progressive opposition allies, The Third Way and the Left party, are expected to bring the opposition a combined 248 seats in the Sejm, Poland’s 460-seat lower house of parliament.
Mr Morawiecki’s government has pursued a nationalist and populist agenda, while weakening democratic values and institutions, including controversial purges of both the constitutional court and the central bank, replacing independent judges and officials with PiS loyalists.In June, the EU’s Court of Justice ruled that the judicial reforms that undermined the constitutional court’s independence constituted a breach of EU law – just one of many clashes between Warsaw and the EU institutions.
