El lunes era el último día de inscripciones a los comicios. Se rumoreaba que otros políticos podrían presentarse en la votación para reemplazar a Ebrahim Raisi, que murió en un choque de helicóptero con otras siete personas el 19 de mayo.
Fue reelegido hace poco como presidente del parlamento. Sin embargo, muchos conocen a Qalibaf por su apoyo, como general de la Guardia Revolucionaria, a una violenta represión de estudiantes universitarios iraníes en 1999.
