The iconic BBC soap opera, Eldorado, is making a comeback, offering viewers a chance to relive its sunny escapism. Despite its short-lived run in the early 1990s, Eldorado is returning to UKTV's U&Drama channel as reruns. All 156 episodes will air, bringing back the fictional town of Los Barcos, Costa Eldorado, and its colorful cast of characters.
The beloved BBC show Eldorado is making a comeback to television screens after being canceled 32 years ago. Initially launched in 1992, the series ran for only a year before being axed due to low viewership, despite airing nearly 160 episodes on BBC One. Eldorado aimed to offer viewers a refreshing escape from the often-grim storylines of popular soaps like EastEnders and Coronation Street, transporting them to the sunny fictional town of Los Barcos, Costa Eldorado , in Spain.
The show concluded with one of its central characters, Marcus Tandy, escaping after another character attempted to assassinate him by bombing his car. Fortunately, the fan-favorite character survived the harrowing ordeal and sailed away to a new life with his girlfriend. Despite its initial ambition, Eldorado was considered a significant financial failure for the BBC, as it invested heavily in its production and promotion only to see it falter. Now, a new generation of viewers will have the opportunity to experience the show's escapism. However, instead of brand-new episodes, Eldorado will be returning as reruns on UKTV's channel U&Drama, starting Monday, January 27. The platform plans to air two episodes daily, showcasing all 156 episodes of the series. This revival follows previous reruns on UK Gold in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as well as select episodes being added to the streaming service BritBox in 2021. The resurgence of reruns highlights a growing trend among television viewers seeking comfort and nostalgia in familiar shows. The original cast featured numerous actors who went on to achieve greater fame, including Jesse Birdsall, known for his role in Hollyoaks, Polly Perkins, who played Dot Cotton's sister on EastEnders, Derek Martin, who later became famous as Charlie Slater on EastEnders, and Julie Fernandez, who later starred as Brenda in the BBC comedy The Office
