Rishi Sunak's accusations over Labour's plans have been met with derision by the party
Good morning and welcome to i's liveblog. Labour has hit back at claims by Rishi Sunak during the first election debate that it would raise tax by £2,000. Shadow paymaster general Jonathan Ashworth told reporters: “What he was saying tonight about Labour’s plans was absolute garbage. “The dossier he put out, based on Tory special adviser assumptions, was absolute nonsense. Indeed Nick Macpherson, the former permanent secretary of the Treasury, described it as ‘garbage in, garbage out’.
“I’ve been a Treasury special adviser, I know how to do those assumptions when it comes to spending commitments and those assumptions they put in there were frankly embarrassing.” He added: “I think Rishi Sunak looked desperate, he looked desperate and weak tonight.' However Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer denied that Rishi Sunak had appeared “tetchy”.
