The betting scandal engulfing politics has sharply eroded trust, with voters seeing it as “typical corruption” and “the final nail in the Tory coffin”. Russell George became the fifth Tory figure confirmed to be under investigation by the Gambling Commission for placing suspicious bets on Tuesday evening. Rishi Sunak has so far suspended two candidates: Craig Williams, a top aide, and Laura Saunders, who were both standing for seats in Wales.
