Former president Donald Trump, during a campaign event Thursday in Arizona, embraced Joe Arpaio, the controversial former sheriff there whom Trump pardoned in 2017. Trump invited Arpaio onstage at the Phoenix event and appeared to kiss him on the neck while hugging him. “I don’t kiss men, but I kiss him,” Trump said. “We had a real border with this guy. People said he was too tough.
Now they’re saying, ‘Where is Sheriff Joe?’” Trump pardoned Arpaio, the former Maricopa County sheriff, less than a month after he was convicted of criminal contempt of court. He disobeyed a judge’s order to stop detaining people because he only suspected they were undocumented immigrants. After coming onstage, Arpaio said that in Trump, he has found “the only hero I ever had in my life.” President Biden’s reelection campaign quickly responded to the joint appearance.
