An elementary school student died in a house fire in Middlefield early Friday morning, according to a message the superintendent of Regional School District 13 sent to families.
Two people were inside the home. One of them got out, along with a dog, officials said, but another person was trapped. “We are a small community and everybody knows everybody or has a connection with everybody, whether it be our kids went to school together or things like that, so this is an extremely difficult situation,” Middlefield Fire Chief Peter Tyc said.He said the home did have a working smoke detector, which notified the residents and could have prevented further tragedy.
