Foreign Minister Penny Wong has been hit with fresh backlash from the opposition after she strongly endorsed Palestinian statehood in a speech to the ANU’s National Security College.
Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and the peak Jewish body in Australia have accused Foreign Minister Penny Wong of rewarding terrorism after she called for the establishment of a two-state solution to the Israel i–Palestinian conflict.
“Everyone from President Biden down supports a future Palestinian state with a reformed Palestinian authority. The problem is that the Palestinian authority is neither reformed nor in charge,” Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley told Sky News Australia host Peter Stefanovic on Wednesday. Ms Ley also said she feels for Australia’s Jewish community, questioning how they could find comfort as she claimed the Labor government had “stepped away” from its bipartisan position on Israel.
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry recognised the Foreign Minister spoke with the best of intentions, however, maintained the view the government should be standing in solidarity with a key ally and showing understanding rather than lecturing.
