Iain Packer, 51, was ordered to serve a minimum sentence of 36 years in February 2024 by judge Lord Beckett following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
The serial rapist serving life for murdering Emma Caldwell has failed an attempt to reduce the punishment part of his jail sentence.
He said: “I say it is excessive. I ask if it is acceptable in a civilised society that we say to a man in his 50s that he will not be released - regardless of what happens - until he is in his 80s?Lady Dorrian and her colleagues then rose from their chairs to confer in a huddle. “A significant number of women and girls who showed remarkable courage to speak up at that time also did not get the justice and support they needed and deserved from Strathclyde Police.”
A dog walker found Miss Caldwell’s body in woodland, with a “garotte” around her neck, on May 8, 2005.
